Roofing 101

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Roofing on your home can be preserved by a little maintenance. Cleaning the leaves from the roof system will prevent the growth of algae and fungus. These two things can hurt the life of your roof system. The gutters should remain clean and free of all debris including water and leaves. Some roofing companies offer pressure washing for your roof system, but I must advise against this type of maintenance for it removes the protective granules from the tar matting.

Many roof leaks can be preventive with a little roof maintenance. Caulking the pipes and chimney each year will prevent most roof leaks. If you need a roofing contractor to do your maintenance, then the yellow pages is the best place to look. Good luck with your roof maintenance program.

water damage

Friday, September 18th, 2009

Heavy rain fall can cause extreme damage to the inside of your home if you have a leaky roof. You may minimize water damage by placing a bucket underneath the leak. This is the antiquated way to fix a roof, but if you get annual roof maintenance there is a slim likelihood of getting any water damage inside of your home.

Water damage is covered under your homeowners insurance most of the time. The downside is if you have too many insurance claims on your homeowners insurance there is a good chance that they will cancel you at the end of renewal. So be cautious when submitting a claim to your insurance agent so that it is worth your time and money.

chimney flashing

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

Chimney flashing is required to be installed at the wall line of the chimney where it articulates with the existing substrate for watertight protection. while most roofing contractors will use wet or dry rubber cement to seal the shingles together, our approach is to install trim coil metal to divert water away from the penetration. The Owens Corning Corp. requires that chimney flashing be installed onto all old existing roofs as well as new construction.

There are many new roofing products that are coming to the market that will one day replace chimney flashing. Hydro stop is such a material that will one day make it possible for roofing contractors to leave the chimney flashing out of the roof installation. Although the Hydro stop roofing system is on the market today, it is very expensive in lieu of the trim coil metal. For the next 5 to 8 years metal chimney flashing will be required per Owens Corning’s standards.

how to repair a leaking roof

Sunday, September 6th, 2009

We show you how to repair a leaking roof, such as asphalt shingles, flat roofs, and chimneys. flat roofs and chimneys are the easiest routes to repair. when you notice that there is a leak in your roof system, the quickest way to find the leak and is to call a roofing contractor. If you are short on funds, you may venture to do the repairs yourself. More often than not you will find the source of the leak from inside the attic space. Take a flashlight and a hammer and go into your attic space and begin to look for water stains on the decking. When you have located those stains take your hammer and nail and place the nail through the stained decking so that and it exits the roof structure.

Now that we have located the location of the leak, let us get up on the roof and find where the nail came through the roof structure. When you have found the nail coming to the roof structure, you have located the source of the leak. The pending on the type of material that was used on your roof system will determine the type of material used to complete the repair. If the roof has asphalt shingles installed, then you will need to replace the old damaged shingles with new composition shingles that may be purchased from Home Depot. If the roof is flat, there may have been a built-up roofs installed previously. You may choose to install hydro-stop, cold tar process,or GAF modified bitumen. When you have installed these new roof materials according to manufacturer specifications within the leak should be repaired.

Roofing Tools are great assets when you are in the roofing industry. A conveyor or a ladder hoist is an absolute must for the shingles will over work your staff if you have to tote the shingles on top of the house. Hammers have given way to nail guns that run on compressed air. The nail guns help roof installers to double their installation of shingles. These new tools helps the roofers to finish the home faster and requiring less labor. The roofing contractor can cut cost which is a direct saving for the customer. The installation process is easier with toe brackets as well. Roofing company s that have up to date tools will serve their customers faster and be more affordable.

New Roof Estimate

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

A New Roof Estimate can be very simple or quite complex for it depends on how well the contractors presents the proposal to their potential customers. The roof estimate should be written or type so that all work is spelled out to a tee. There should be no surprises in the end when collection of the payment. Customers will be very unhappy if you surprise them with a beg price increase in the final close of the roof project.

A professional roofing contractor will excel above the average contractors. He will provide a clear and detailed new roof estimate, Insurance Certificate, and the final invoice upon completion of the job. With so many scams today, A roofing contractor should take all professional advice from their CPA as well as an Attorney to make sure they are operating within the law. A  new roof estimate should not be just an estimate, it should be protection. The warranty should state the price of the original new roof estimate. Follow these guidelines, and you should do quite well.
