Chimney flashing is required to be installed at the wall line of the chimney where it articulates with the existing substrate for watertight protection. while most roofing contractors will use wet or dry rubber cement to seal the shingles together, our approach is to install trim coil metal to divert water away from the penetration. The Owens Corning Corp. requires that chimney flashing be installed onto all old existing roofs as well as new construction.
There are many new roofing products that are coming to the market that will one day replace chimney flashing. Hydro stop is such a material that will one day make it possible for roofing contractors to leave the chimney flashing out of the roof installation. Although the Hydro stop roofing system is on the market today, it is very expensive in lieu of the trim coil metal. For the next 5 to 8 years metal chimney flashing will be required per Owens Corning’s standards.
