Modified Bitumen
Modified bitumen roofs are those made out of bituminous membranes. It is in essence, a hybrid roof, with the benefits of built in redundancy, mixed in with added strength, UV protection, and flexibility. These membranes are constructed with a polymer mixed with asphalt. It allows the asphalt to take on the characteristics of the polymer. These roofs are a great choice.
Modified bitumen comes with many of the benefits that a Timberline shingle has. It actually can be any of the colors of that series. It comes in weathered wood, slate, shake wood, hickory, and tan. It is fire resistant. It can accentuate any look you desire (wood, brick, etc). Since it is a hybrid, it is long lasting no matter what climate you are in. It is strong in polyester so it is less prone to cracking and splitting.
The roll size of this is only one square foot, which is less than to be desired. However, since this is only to supplement the shingle, this is not too big of a problem. It is extremely thin, at only about four millimeters, yet, it is extremely strong. It is reinforced with polyester for added strength.
There are three different ways to apply the modified bitumen. First, is by hot mop SBS application. This is the preferred version for commercial and industrial applications. Second, is by cold adhesive SBS application. This is much more convenient, and is especially handy if your area does not accept asphalt fumes. Lastly, is by heat welding APP application. This is one of the best, since it is super sticky to your roof, and is great in cooler climates.
Modified bitumen has many advantages. First, there is greater quality assurance. Many different technologies such as waterproofing, weather resistance, etc and all made into a single ply thin membrane that provides uniformity throughout. Second, there are increased physical properties due to its ability to take very hot and very cold temperatures. Third, the cost advantages are there. There is almost no labor cost in modified bitumen, so although it may cost a bit extra at first, you don’t need to hire any Atlanta roofing company to apply it.
A few other advantages are consistent performance as well as its similarities to low slope roofs. Modified bitumen has proved to be a great substance that it is increasing its market share in many different countries. Since they are so similar, the implementations of these are quick and easy.
